Iwami
The Iwami region is located in the western part of Shimane. Hamada City, the active fishing area blessed with great natural ports, offers great tourism and leisure spots such as designated Natural Monument Iwami Tatamigaura and Shimane Aquarium Aquas, which is famous for its beluga whales. Two Kakinomoto Shrines said to be the place where Kakinomoto Hitomaro, a famous Manyoshu poet (the oldest collection of Japanese poetry), ended his life, are located in Masuda City, a town famous for Hitomaro and Sesshu, as well as its beautiful nature.
