The Oki Islands Geopark has gained admission to the Global Geoparks Network.

   The Oki Islands Geopark has been a member of the Japan Geoparks Network since 2009.
As a result of the inhabitants’ tireless effort towards entering the Global Geoparks Network, the Oki Islands Geopark gained admission to the Global Geoparks Network at the 3rd Asia-Pacific Geoparks Network Jeju Symposium in 2013.
   The Oki Islands, located 50km to the north of the Shimane Peninsula, consist of four large inhabited islands and around 180 smaller islands and rocky reefs. The islands were formed by volcanic activities 6 million years ago, and due to its unique climatic and geographic environment, this isolated island group features dramatic landscapes and rugged scenery, a wide range of plants and animals, as well as rich history and cultural traditions.

The three islands; Nishinoshima Islands (Nishinoshima Town), Nakanoshima Islands(Ama Town), and Chiburijima Islands (Chibu Village), are collectively referred as ‘The Dōzen Islands’, and Okinoshima Island (Okinoshima Town ) is referred to as ‘Dōgo Island’.
There is an endless list of outdoor activities available here too, with many people enjoying hiking, fishing, sea kayaking, diving and snorkeling.
