The cherry trees of Unnan City
Nestled between the mountains of eastern Shimane Prefecture, Unnan City is a historic town that is home to various legends. With rows of approximately 800 cherry trees along the banks of the Hii River that runs through the city center and a further 1,000 trees lining the banks of the Mitoya River, Unnan has been chosen as one of Japan’s Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots. When in full bloom visitors can enjoy a stroll under the cherry blossoms, with the rows of cherry trees forming a long tunnel of blossoms.

Forest therapy in Iinan Town
Forest therapy in the heart of verdant woods is perfect for soothing heart and mind and promoting health and well-being. The area around Iinan Town in the south-central part of Shimane has been certified as a “base for forest therapy,” the healing effects of which have been scientifically verified. The Forest Therapy Road is paved with wood chips, and visitors can sample many programs that make the most of the natural surroundings. The woodland hotel MORINOSU is the base for forest therapy and its cuisine is also popular, featuring locally sourced ingredients like Shimane wagyu beef.

Yakumo Yu-yu Koinobori (carp streamers)
Koinobori, or carp streamers are displayed on Children’s Day (May 5), and are part of a tradition to wish for the healthy growth of children. The streamers are made to resemble carp and flutter in the wind. By the Iyugawa River in Yakumo Town an event is held every year to celebrate Children’s Day by displaying these carp streamers along the river banks. It is a truly mesmerizing sight to see the approximately 130 streamers of varying colors all “swimming” leisurely against the backdrop of a blue sky.
