Surround Yourself with the Timeless Beauty of Shimane's Natural Wonders

Shimane Prefecture is located in the northwesternmost part of Honshu (Japan's main island), facing the Sea of Japan. Stretching from east to west, its diverse regions include the lush Chugoku Mountains, a varied coastline, and islands dotting the Sea of Japan, each area offering its own unique beauty.

  • Lake Shinji

Lake Shinji, a symbol of Shimane's scenic beauty, is the seventh-largest lake in Japan. A brackish lake where fresh and saltwater mix, it has been selected as one of Japan's top 100 sunset locations. In the evenings, the lake's surface transforms into a breathtaking gradient of purple and madder red, mirroring the ever-changing colors of the sky. A sunset cruise on a pleasure boat is highly recommended.

  • The Oki Islands

The Oki Islands, comprising around 180 islands, including four inhabited ones, are a place to feel the raw power of nature. The islands have been recognized as the Oki Islands UNESCO Global Geopark for their rarity in many respects, including geological transformations ongoing from time immemorial, continuously evolving ecosystems, and cultural heritage. The Matengai Cliff on the Kuniga Coast of Nishinoshima Island is a particularly stunning spot, where a 257-meter vertical cliff rises dynamically from the sea.

  • Mount Sanbe

Mount Sanbe, a national park located in the center of Shimane Prefecture, is one of only two active volcanoes in the Chugoku region. Visitors can enjoy various activities throughout the four seasons, such as hi-ire, a traditional springtime controlled burning to maintain and preserve the beautiful grasslands, hiking, and winter snowshoeing. On the mountain's southern side is the renowned Sanbe Onsen, one of the highest-volume hot springs in western Japan. Be sure to stop here to unwind and soak in the relaxing waters.
