The beauty that comes from the belief that this island is where God lives
Miyajima is thought to be the island where God lives. It is said that Itsukushima Shrine is built on the coast because the entire island is considered the body of God and is sanctified.
Itsukushima Shrine was built at the end of the 6th century and modified to become the current building with its solemn appearance by Kiyomori Taira, who first came to power as a warrior in 1168. It is located in the sea and has a bold structure as its shape changes with the rising and falling tide. In addition, the landscape combined with the vermillion lacquered shrine building, the green virgin forest at the back, and the blue sea duly sumbolizes the Japanese sense of beauty. The beauty of the landscapes continues to attract visitors.
