The Nagata Collection of Hokusai
The Shimane Museum of Art is celebrating their 20th Anniversary with a very special Hokusai exhibition from the “Nagata Collection”.


The “Nagata Collection” is a 2,000 piece count collection of Hokusai and his pupils that had been personally owned by the foremost ukiyo-e specialist, Mr. Nagata Seiji and donated to the Shimane Art Museum. From the collection and on display will be rare high-quality first editions, Hokusai classics, hand drawings, and other ukiyo-e related pieces. Beginning with this two-part exhibition of Hokusai, the museum will display the whole “Nagata Collection” to the public over the course of 10 years.

Nagata Seiji who is known as the foremost ukiyo-e specialist and owner of one of the world’s biggest Hokusai collections was born in the town of
Tsuwano in the western part of Shimane.
