Yuushien Garden
Promenade garden with peonies in year-round bloom
The view from the magnificent Western-style building beside Matsue Castle is also exceptional
Kounkaku is a beautiful Western-style building immediately beside Matsue Castle, a national treasure. It is gorgeously constructed, with extensive use of decorations and carvings, and the view of the Matsuescape from the second floor is exceptional. When you visit Matsue Castle, by all means visit Kounkaku as well. The building was originally built to display Matsue City’s handicrafts, but in 1907, it was repurposed as an inn for the Crown Prince (later Emperor Taisho) to stay in when visiting San-in.
