A studio where it is possible to observe ceramics being made, try your hand at making them yourself, and buy souvenirs
Sodeshi Kiln is located in Matsue City in Shimane Prefecture, and is run by its fifth-generation potter, having celebrated its 143rd anniversary in 2020. The building, which is more than 100 years old, houses a studio on the first floor and a display and sales area on the second floor. Visitors can watch work being made, buy items, and try their hand at drawing designs on work prior to firing. Sodeshi Kiln uses locally-produced raw materials, and the work created here adds a fresh aesthetic to colors and shapes that are produced using traditional methods. The kiln is committed to making and selling tableware, vases and tea utensils that are both robust and easy to use on a daily basis.
